Two more suspects had been arrested in connection with the rape of a woman stranded on the N1 highway near Booysens on Monday morning, Johannesburg police reported on Tuesday.

Captain Lungelo Dlamini said the suspects were arrested near the scene of the crime and a firearm, a cellphone and car keys were recovered.

The woman was alone in a broken-down car at about 11am on Monday when a gang of five attacked her.

She had remained with the car while her husband went to get help, said Dlamini.

The woman was forced from the vehicle and robbed before being dragged by one of the gang to a piece of open ground near the highway and raped. The other suspects stayed at the car and started to strip the vehicle.

A witness contacted the police. A highway patrol vehicle answered the call and spotted the vehicle being stripped.

When the policemen approached, four suspects at the car and the alleged rapist fled in different directions.

A suspect who ignored police warnings was shot dead, while another was arrested.

The three arrested suspects, aged 15, 16 and 17, are to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court soon. - Sapa
