Victoria Spencer, children 'to quit SA'

Published Aug 1, 2000

Victoria Spencer, the former wife of Princess Diana's brother, Charles, Earl Spencer, is reportedly leaving South Africa with her four children after living in Cape Town for four years.

The Daily Mail in London published a story that said the 35-year-old Victoria Spencer would leave her luxury home in Silverhurst Estate in Constantia to return to the United Kingdom.

The newspaper said this followed the break-up of her four-year-long relationship with a Constantia pharmacist, Guy Woods.

An employee at the Constantia Pharmacy in the Constantia Village Centre said Woods was on holiday and would be back at the end of the month. Victoria, a recovering alcoholic and anorexic, opened The Stepping Stones treatment centre in Main Road, Kommetjie in 1998.

She also counselled patients at a drug treatment clinic in Claremont while she stayed in Cape Town. The centres refused to comment on her future plans on Tuesday.

She was married to the earl for eight years before they divorced in 1997, a few months after Princess Diana's death in a car crash in Paris. The couple's children, nine-year-old Kitty, eight-year-old twins Eliza and Katya and six-year-old Louis, were already attending school in the United Kingdom, according to an agreement between the Spencers.

Victoria received R14,7-million and the Silverhurst Estate house as part of the divorce settlement.

Victoria, a former fashion model in New York and Paris, was also awarded R32 000 maintenance annually for each child. The couple have joint custody of the children.
