A notorious armed robber and escaped prisoner was allegedly "executed" by community members at Nodwengu, in Ndewedwe, north of Durban, on Thursday.

The man, who was among eight prisoners who escaped from the Verulam police cells recently, was a known armed robber who plundered the local community.

Of the eight who escaped, four were recaptured.

Superintendent Vasie Naidu said the man's body had been found in dense bush.

"A sack had been tied over his head. A single shot from point blank range went right through his head."

Naidu said the man was known to be an armed robber and wreaked havoc among members of the community who, it seemed, took revenge.

"This does not mean that if a person is a criminal, people can take the law into their own hands. A detailed investigation into the man's death will be held and all efforts will be made to bring the killers to court," said Naidu.
