Cape Town - Another Metrorail train was on fire in Cape Town on Saturday afternoon, and arson is again suspected.

Black smoke rose over the Cape Town CBD on Saturday afternoon as two railway carriages burned on Cape Town station. No injuries were reported.

According to the City of Cape Town's Fire and Rescue, 19 firefighters, three fire engines, a water tanker and one rescue vehicle were dispatched to the scene.

Metrorail Western Cape spokesperson Riana Scott has put the value of a fire-damaged carriage at between R1.5m and R6m.

This is the third incident of trains being set alight in the past eight days.

Last Saturday, seven train carriages were destroyed, others damaged, and station infrastructure was also damaged when two trains caught alight at platforms 15 and 16 at Cape Town Station.

Several carriages were also reportedly damaged when a fire broke out on a train at Retreat Station on Thursday.

The United National Transport Union (Untu) said the same method was used for all previous arson attacks.

The South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) has blamed sinister forces  for the "deliberate acts of sabotage".

”We are inclined to believe that these are deliberate acts of sabotage that are relentlessly pursued by sinister forces determined to halt train services at all costs irrespective of the inconvenience that this will have on business and commuters,” Sanco national spokesman Jabu Mahlangu said earlier this week.
