Western Cape -

An eight-year-old boy drowned in a lagoon in Wilderness in the Western Cape, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said on Sunday.

The boy disappeared under the water while swimming with friends on Saturday, the NSRI's Wilderness station commander Hennie Niehaus said.

A woman found the boy's body floating in the water as the NSRI was arriving on the scene and was already getting him out.

“Our NSRI medics commenced cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the child... CPR efforts continued in hospital, but sadly after all efforts to resuscitate the child were exhausted he was declared deceased by doctors,” Niehaus said.

Police opened an inquest docket. - Sapa
