Cape Town - Police are investigating at least two shootings in Nyanga, Cape Town, in which nine people have reportedly been killed and three more wounded. 

While details about the carnage are still sketchy, the South African Police Service tweeted about the shootings on Friday night.

According to reports, unknown suspects opened fire at a tavern in the Marikana informal settlement, fatally wounding four people. 

At the second scene three people were shot dead inside a shack, and another gunned down outside.


Two more bodies were discovered lying in between shacks close to the scene of the second shooting.

Reports that a man and a woman have been taken to hospital with gunshot wounds have yet to be confirmed.

Police are currently on the scene.
