Cape Town - A bus driver was killed and five people were injured when the vehicle left the road and crashed into shacks in Khayelitsha on Friday, paramedics said.

The bus veered off Mew Way, near the N2, flattened several informal dwellings and came to a halt in a house around 9.30pm, ER24 spokesman Derrick Banks said in a statement.

The bus was empty, except for the driver. He died on the scene. Five people, including a child, were injured, two of them critically.

A car was involved in the accident. It had damage on its side.

The cause of the accident was not known. - Sapa
