Cape Town - A Caledon school principal with almost 30 years experience as an educator has committed suicide. A post on the Hoërskool Overberg Facebook page identified the man as their principal of 7 years, Eddie Labuschagne.

Police have confirmed that they are investigating the death of a 49-year-old from a self-inflicted gunshot at around 10.25 on Tuesday morning and that an inquest docket has been opened. No further details about the incident are available at this time.

While police could not confirm the identity of the deceased, the Western Cape Education Department has confirmed that it had been informed that Labuschagne had committed suicide. The department has arranged for pupils and teachers to receive trauma counselling.

Hoërskool Overberg has expressed sadness at Labuschagne's death but said that after consultation with the department it was decided that exams will continue as scheduled.

"We are deeply saddened by the news of Mr Labuschagne’s passing and our heartfelt condolences go to Mrs Labuschagne and their two children. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire family, friends and school community," said WCED spokesperson Jessica Shelver.
