CAPE TOWN - A police constable and his friend were shot dead and a woman was wounded in a shooting incident in Bardale in Mfuleni in Cape Town, the police in the Western Cape said.

Reports at the disposal of the police indicated that 25-year-old Constable Thobinceba Xhontelo had just stopped a vehicle he was driving when he realised there was a vehicle that had followed him, Brigadier Novela Potelwa said in a statement.

"The occupants of the vehicle opened fire, killing him just outside the vehicle. The gunmen proceeded and fired several shots at the occupants of the vehicle Xhontelo had been driving.

"As a consequence, two occupants suffered gunshot wounds. The suspects subsequently fled in a vehicle. A 24-year-old male died as the two occupants were transported to hospital, while a 32-year-old woman, who was shot in the leg, was admitted in hospital.

Detectives from the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (Hawks) were investigating, Potelwa said.

Western Cape police commissioner Lt-Gen Yolisa Matakata expressed condolences to the family and colleagues of Xhontelo. She decried the senseless killing of a police official who was in the prime of his life. Xhontelo was stationed at Kuilsriver SAPS. He graduated from the SAPS  police academy in December 2019.
