Cape Town - The Open Mosque in Cape Town was set alight on Saturday morning, Western Cape police said.

“An arson case is being investigated after the front door of a mosque in Lester Road in Wynberg (was) set alight at 1am,” Lt-Col. Andrè Traut said.

He did not provide any further details.

It was unknown if anyone had been inside the mosque at the time, or if the fire had spread.

Traut said no arrests had been made and police were investigating.

eNCA reported that vandals were to blame for the incident.

The mosque’s founder Taj Hargey told the broadcaster windows and a door were damaged by vandals. He called on the Muslim Judiciary Council to look into the incident.

Hargey said the mosque remained open. - Sapa
