Cape Town has been voted the fourth-best city in the world to visit by the readers of Travel + Leisure magazine – and the Cape Grace hotel as one of the best hotels in the world.

The New York publication has more than 4.5 million readers and is run by American Express.

The Travel + Leisure readers rated their best travel experiences in a questionnaire put together by the editors of the magazine.

Mariëtte du Toit-Helmbold, chief executive of Cape Town Tourism, said “Cape Town has consistently featured in the Travel + Leisure line-up and we are proud to maintain a top-of-mind position with the world’s most avid travel lovers”.

The top three cities on the list were Bangkok, Istanbul and Florence. Kyoto, Japan, was fifth and Rome sixth.

The Cape Grace was nominated as the 26th top hotel in the world, up from number 44 last year.

A few luxury safari lodges in the Kruger National Park also made the top hotels list.

Du Toit-Helmbold said:

“The prevalence of these exclusive hotels bodes well for the luxury market as many high-end safari travellers include a trip to Cape Town on their itinerary. That they continue their journey in Cape Town in some of the continent’s – and the world’s – best hotels means Cape Town remains firmly on the luxury travel map.”
