Cape Town - Red paint has been smeared over part of the statue of Louis Botha outside Parliament.

The paint marks, which seemed to have appeared overnight on Thursday, covered part of the Afrikaans inscription on the base of the contested statue which reads “Louis Botha, Boer, Krygsman, Staatsman.”

The Economic Freedom Fighters have in recent days urged supporters to topple the likeness of the first prime minister of the Union of South Africa and that of Jan van Riebeeck in Heerengracht Street in Cape Town.
