Cape Town - One child died and another was seriously injured in a bus accident in Porterville in the Western Cape on Friday, traffic authorities said.

"One child died and another was trapped inside the bus, seriously injured," provincial traffic chief Kenny Africa said.

Rescue services managed to free and stabilise the injured child, he added.

The accident happened shortly after 11am on Friday on a public gravel road near the Tierkloof farm in Porterville, according to Africa.

He said there were four children in the bus. Two and the driver escaped unharmed.

"The driver apparently lost control of the bus," Africa said.
