Cape Town - A patron at the Cubaña nightclub in Stellenbosch, where two people were shot dead early on Saturday, said two gunmen fired a volley of shots into a crowd after the man they were hunting evaded them.

Phaks Photh’inja, who was at the club during the shooting, said that two men ran into the club chasing another man.

“He came into the club chasing this guy and they shot at him, so he ran into the bathroom and they followed him but the crowd was in the way so they fired three or four shots directly into the crowd,” Photh’inja said.

He added a woman was shot in the head and he went over to help her.

Another patron, a University of Stellenbosch student, said: “I’m very traumatised and not in a good place to talk.”

The 30-year-old woman shot dead has been identified as Nicole Muller. She was a mother of two.

A family friend said it was too soon for Muller's family to comment.

Messages of support have been posted on Facebook.
