Oudtshoorn - A disabled man died when he fell down stairs at the Cango Caves near Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape on Friday morning, the local municipality said.

The 41-year-old sustained fatal head injuries when he fell down the stairs in the second chamber of the caves known as Botha’s hall, spokesman Ntobeko Mangqwengqwe said in a statement.

“Information at hand suggests that the deceased might have missed a step and fell,” said Mangqwengqwe.

“The Cango Caves' medical response team was immediately activated. Attempts to resuscitate him failed and he was declared dead by paramedics on the scene.”

The man was part of tour group from Eljada, a local care centre for people living with disabilities, who were participating in a complimentary tour of the caves.

Mangqwengqwe could not confirm the man's disability.

He said the cause of death was unknown and police were investigating.

Tours were temporarily halted at the caves following the accident and would continue on Saturday.
