Cape Town - A father of three and club rugby player has died in hospital after he was seriously injured during a match on

Saturday.

Steven “Stevovo” Jacobs who played for Masiphumelele Rugby Club in Noordhoek was knocked out after he and a rival player apparently collided with each other.

The match was between Masiphumelele and Caledonian Roses in Noordhoek.

Steven, a carpenter from Fish Hoek, broke his C3 vertebrae and was rushed to hospital where he was placed on life support.

The 38-year-old, who played hooker, passed away in Groote Schuur Hospital on Monday and leaves behind his wife Dina and three children.

His club said there would be no investigation into the matter as his death was brought on by “an unfortunate incident”.

Club chairperson Darren Clarke said Steven had joined the club in 2010 and played in the first team at all levels from division 4 up to and including Super League C.

The Daily Voice attempted to speak to Steven’s family but they did not respond to queries.

Darren said the family would be supported by the rugby

fraternity.

“We are all deeply saddened by this tragic event and our focus is now to support his wife Dina and their three children,” he said.

“We have set up a trust account and are raising as much money as we can for the family. Anyone wishing to contribute can contact the club for details."

“We would like to thank the WP union and the many clubs who have offered support and condolences over the past week."

“We have been greatly encouraged by the sense of community that has shown itself from the greater rugby family.”
