Cape Town – Two fire fighters died on Wednesday afternoon when their helicopter crashed in Bainskloof near Wellington, Cape Winelands Emergency Services said.

“There was a fire and they were on their way to help when the accident happened,” an emergency worker on the scene told ANA.

He confirmed that the pilot and passenger, who were both members of Working on Fire, died in the crash, but could give no further details because their families had not yet been informed.

He said local rescue services had not yet been able to make contact with the headquarters for Working for Fire, a state-funded service started as a job creation programme about a decade ago.

In March a helicopter rescue pilot died after being forced to make a crash landing while fighting a wildfire at Cape Point.
