A fully-clothed man was found drowned in the tidal pool at St James early yesterday, with his iPod earphones still in his ears.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, is thought to have slipped off the retaining wall.

Cape disaster management spokesman Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said: “At this stage it would appear that the man could have been walking on the pool wall when he slipped and (hit) his head, which resulted in him falling in the pool.”

He said the man had a cut above his right eyebrow.

Police spokesman Captain Frederick van Wyk said this theory was supported by people who had seen the man on the beach earlier.

Muizenberg police are investigating.

l Four people were rescued after being lost near Plattekloof Gorge on Table Mountain yesterday. Emergency Medical Services spokeswoman Keri Davids said they were alerted shortly after midday that four South Africans, two men and two women aged between 24 and 30, had lost their way.

They had phoned friends who contacted the medical service.

Rescuers from the service and Wildnerness Search and Rescue found the group at around 6pm in the mist, not far from the Lower Cable Station.

The group were walked down the mountain and to the parking area. - Weekend Argus
