More than 1 400 people have been left homeless a day before Christmas after a fire, fanned by a howling south-easter, swept through Valhalla Park in Cape Town on Monday.

Shortly after 11am, when the fire broke out, some people were at home and able to rescue their possessions but others were out or at work and came home to ashes. It is not known how the fire started. - Cape Argus
