#JasonRohde found guilty of wife's murder
Cape Town - Former property mogul Jason Rohde has been found guilty of the murder of his wife Susan and defeating the ends of justice.
Western Cape High Court Judge Gayaat Salie-Hlophe said on Thursday: “The State proved beyond reasonable doubt your version is not possibly reasonably true.”
Susan was found dead in a locked bathroom in a room she shared with Rohde on July 24, 2016 at the Spier Wine Estate Hotel.
She was found with an electronic cord wrapped around her neck. The cord had been tied to the hook of the bathroom door.
Judge Salie-Hlophe said the State's evidence proved beyond reasonable doubt: “You had direct intent to kill.”
Jason's bail was denied. He was escorted to the holding cells crying.
During trial the court heard Rohde's version that Susan had committed suicide after finding out he had not ended an affair he had with his employee.
In arguments, Rohde's defence lawyer, advocate Graham van der Spuy, said Susan had caused her own death and that Jason's version of events corroborated with all the objective facts, DNA evidence, fingerprints, telephone records and blood spatter evidence.
"The first person to examine her on the scene was State pathologist Dr Akmal Coetzee-Khan, who never mentioned an inside-out gown in his report,” Van Der Spuy said.
