Cape Town - A 23-year-old man from Elsies River drowned at Rocklands Beach in Sea Point on Sunday.

The National Sea Rescue Institute said the man had gone into the sea to help a friend but witnesses said the man had gone for a swim by himself.

When the Cape Argus arrived at the scene at 5.30pm, paramedics were trying to resuscitate the man.

A young woman standing behind the yellow police tape identified the man as her friend Zayroudien Samson.

The police have opened an inquest docket.

Meanwhile, after three days of singeing heat, Capetonians can look forward to cooler weather for the rest of the week.

The weekend heat was caused by an offshore air flow which preceded a coastal low-pressure system, said forecaster Rian Smit of the Cape Town Weather Bureau.

Hot air flowing from the interior had moved towards the coast, sending temperatures soaring to highs of over 40°C in parts.

But the good news was the coastal low had arrived overnight and, as airflow turned around and headed back landwards, temperatures would drop.

“The air flowing from the sea to the land is obviously cooler and more moist and, therefore, temperatures would drop to about the mid-to-late 20s,” Smit said.

“On Wednesday evening, a very weak front may come around but we do not expect it to rain. Next weekend might be sunny and hot again but most likely not as hot as it was this weekend.”
