Cape Town - The Monkey Town resort in Somerset West in Cape Town has closed its doors for the day after a blaze ripped through the building the night before, said Monkey Town in a Facebook post.

They said although power been restored, the telephone lines were burned down.

"All our animals survived. We are so thankful. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers. We have a lot of damage on the property," said Monkey Town.

On Thursday night before 11pm, the City’s Fire and Rescue services responded to a fire at the resort. When the fire service arrived, they found the main restaurant building was alight.

Three fire engines, two water tankers and a rescue vehicle with 21 firefighters were on the scene.

The restaurant and outside decking were destroyed by the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
