Cape Town – Firefighters have managed to contain a veld fire in the Cape Winelands region yesterday.

The fire started on Tuesday between the N1 and the old Du Toitskloof Pass.

According to the head of communications at Cape Winelands District Municipality, Jo-Anne Otto, there was a strong possibility of flare-ups occurring due to high temperatures and the heated state of the ground.

Teams would monitor the area for the next 24-36 hours.

The Huguenot Tunnel, which was closed on Friday and yesterday afternoon, was reopened. Firefighters were battling to control a fire near Wemmershoek that was caused by the fire that started on Tuesday.

A fire in a mixed fynbos area in Monte Carlo near Ceres was contained by fireighters.
