Cape Town - An internet user on Thursday posted a spoof sale of the soon-to-be-moved Cecil John Rhodes statue on Gumtree.

“Statue comes with a free international scholarship which can change your future! Great conversation starter for your next braai,” read the online advert by the user known as “Safferland”.

The spoof sale valued the Rhodes statue at a mere R1 500.

Interested buyers were informed that the previous owner was trying to erase the past.

The real statue, located on the University of Cape Town’s upper campus, was on Thursday hooked up to a crane ahead of its removal at 5pm.

The statue would be removed from its prominent position on the campus to one agreed to by Heritage Western Cape and the UCT but would be off campus for safe-keeping.
