Cape Town - Three people have been killed and two others were critically injured in two separate crashes on the N1 in the Worcester area in the Western Cape, paramedics said on Sunday.

Two people were killed and one was critically injured when a car crashed into the back of a truck on the N1 about 16km from Touws River in the direction of Laingsburg on Saturday afternoon, ER24 spokeswoman Annine Siddall said.

ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene and found two men trapped in the car, she said.

"Unfortunately there was nothing paramedics could do to save the two men and they were declared dead on the scene. One person who was in a critical condition was transported to a nearby hospital for further medical care by other emergency services on [the] scene," Siddall said.

In the second incident on the N1 near Worcester, a man, believed to be in his 20s, was killed and another was critically injured when a motorcyclist lost control of his bike on Saturday night.

ER24 Paramedics arrived at the scene at about 9.45pm and found the man showing no signs of life. There was nothing paramedics could do to help him and he was declared dead on the scene.

Another man was in a critical condition and was transported to Mediclinic Worcester by ER24 for further medical care, Siddall said.
