Two killed in shooting at Stellenbosch nightclub

Cape Town - Police have opened a double murder and attempted murder investigation following the shooting of two people in a Cubana nightclub in Stellenbosch on Friday night. 

Two people were shot dead while a further person was taken to hospital for medical attention. While it is understood that one of the victims was an innocent bystander. 

The shooting occurred shortly after midnight at the Cubana nightclub situated at 4 Plein Street in Stellenbosch. Police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that the circumstances surrounding the shooting were currently under investigation. 

Van Wyk confirmed that two individuals, a 40-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman had been shot dead while another woman, whose age is unknown was taken to a nearby hospital to receive medical treatment.  

Phaks Photh’inja, who was at the club during the shooting, said that two men ran into the club chasing another man. 

“He came into the club chasing this guy and they shot at him so he ran into the bathroom and they followed him but the crowd was in the way so they fired three or four shots directly into the crowd,” he said.

He added that the one woman was shot in the head and that he went over to help her she was already unconscious. 

“She was lying on the dance floor bleeding from the head and I went to go help her but she seemed to be unconscious. I don’t think she had anything to do with the guys that were shooting.”    

Minana (who did not want her full name to be used), is a student at the University of Stellenbosch was at the club during the shooting. 

“I’m very traumatised and not in a good place to talk, it was horrible,” she said.
