Cape Town - A taxi driver was killed in Summer Greens near Century City on Saturday when he refused to hand over his belongings to robbers.

Police say after killing the 35-year-old driver, the robbers made off in his vehicle.

According to Reagan Croeser, chairperson of the Summer Greens Neighbourhood Watch (SGNHW), the driver stopped at a shop on the corners of Summer Greens Way and Ploughman’s Crescent to buy airtime.

“He was sitting in his car and loading the airtime. He was driving a white VW Polo. They tried to rob him and shot him in the abdomen,” explains Croeser.

Police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk, says about 8:40pm Milnerton police were called to Summer Greens.

“Officers attended to a complaint and was informed that the 35-year-old victim was sitting in his vehicle in Summer Greens Drive when the suspects approached and threatened him with a firearm to rob him of the vehicle,” says Van Wyk.

“When the victim refused he was shot and pulled out of the vehicle and the suspects drove off in the vehicle. A murder case was registered for investigation.”

Croeser says the Watch is concerned about the violent incident in the usually quiet suburb.

“Yes, we are very concerned as a few months ago there was also an attempted hijacking of another taxi driver, but that vehicle was recovered in Summer Greens,” he says.

Uber has confirmed the 35-year-old man drove for them. However, they say he was not working, or online, at the time of the incident.
