Cape Town - A night vigil in memory of murdered Bredasdorp teenager Anene Booysen will be held at the University of Cape Town (UCT) on Tuesday night, the student representative council (SRC) said.

It was aimed at raising awareness about violent crime, SRC president Lorne Hallendorff said in a statement.

“The UCT SRC is left shocked and outraged at the brutal rape and murder of 17-year-old Anene Booysen.”

On Saturday February 2, Booysen was found raped and disembowelled at a construction site in Bredasdorp. She died in hospital later that day.

The night vigil was intended as a show of solidarity with Booysen and others whose lives had been affected by violent crime.

Hallendorff said UCT was still grieving after the murder of student Bayanda Baba, killed while waiting for a taxi in Montana last month.

The vigil would begin at 8.30pm on Tuesday on the lawns of UCT's lower campus. - Sapa
