Cape Town - Macassar residents went on a rampage, allegedly killing two murder suspects in mob justice attacks.
One of the men was stoned to death and the other stabbed, after they allegedly knifed two people in separate incidents.
The bloodbath took place on Monday, and police have yet to make arrests.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk says in the first incident at 9.20pm cops attended a murder scene in Ring Avenue, where they found a 26-year-old man lying on the ground with one stab wound to his chest.
“According to reports, the deceased had an argument with the suspect that resulted in the suspect stabbing him in the chest. The suspect was killed by the members of the community,” Van Wyk said.
In the second incident an hour later, Shane Appolis, 24, was stabbed to death in Kabeljou Street metres from his grandmother’s house where he lived.
On Tuesday, family members held a prayer service at the scene, and erected a memorial post of grass bordered by bricks in the shape of a cross.
His grief-stricken grandmother, Margarette Appolis, 64, says Shane named his killer before he died.
“Shane has been living with me since he was born. He had no children or girlfriend,” Margarette says.
“After 10pm, someone came shouting for my daughter, she came in running saying Shane was stabbed and we rushed out. He was still alive and he uttered the name of the person who stabbed him, then he was gone.”
The granny says Shane always knew how to steal her heart.
“I am really going to miss him. We used to argue a lot and every time he took a walk and came back, he’d just put something on my bed and it was always something sweet like a chocolate or my favourite sweets,” Margarette sobs.
After learning the name of Shane’s alleged killer, angry residents hunted down a suspected 28s gangster, who allegedly pimped prostitutes in the area.
The man was caught opposite the Old Apostolic Church and stoned with concrete blocks.
On Wednesday at the scene, pieces of broken concrete soaked with blood still lay on the pavement.
Van Wyk confirmed Shane was stabbed multiple times and that his suspected killer was stoned to death by residents.
No arrests have been made yet.
