Cape Town - The African National Congress in the Western Cape on Thursday sent its well wishes for the speedy recovery of Anglican Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu.

“Archbishop Tutu is a national treasure who has never stopped working for a better South Africa and a better world. We need him to be in great health for the extensive work that lay ahead,” said provincial secretary Faiez Jacobs.

“As the ANC we would like to send him our warm well wishes for a speedy recovery.”

The 83-year-old Tutu, fondly referred to as “The Arch”, was admitted into hospital on Tuesday night for treatment of a recurring infection.

Just over a week ago, Tutu celebrated his 60th wedding anniversary with wife Leah at St George’s Cathedral where he stood throughout most of the ceremony, dancing to hymns sung by the church choir.

“The Arch has battled with prostate cancer for 15 years now and he has come out stronger every time, he is very resilient, he is full of life, and we know that after the doctors do a few checks, he will be back with even more energy to do his part in taking South Africa forward,” said Jacobs.

Jacobs added that even at his age, Tutu remained “the most energetic and jovial activist our country has ever had and we are happy that he is expected to be discharged this week”.
