Cape Town - Well wishes poured in for Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu on Wednesday, after he was admitted to a Cape Town hospital with a persistent infection.

The ANC sent wishes to Tutu, who was hospitalised on Tuesday. “Our thoughts are with the archbishop at this time and we wish him good health and a speedy recovery,” the ANC said in a statement.

“We have no doubt that, with the love and support of family and friends, the hard work of his medical team and the best wishes of South Africans and the world, the Archbishop will soon be back in good spirits and out of hospital soon.”

The Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation confirmed on Wednesday that Tutu was admitted to hospital to treat a persistent infection.

“His family hopes he will be able to return home in a day or two,” his daughter Reverend Canon Mpho Tutu said.

The 83-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate and his wife Nomalizo Leah celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary earlier in July.

In December, Tutu cancelled his travel plans to attend the Nobel Peace Laureates Summit in Rome, for health reasons, as he embarked on a new course of medication to manage prostate cancer.

Tutu has been battling with prostate cancer for the past 15 years.

Twitter user @terencenaidu tweeted: “Thoughts are with ‘The voice of SA’s conscience’ Archbishop, #DesmondTutu, at this time … Wishing him good health and a speedy recovery”.

@NSojada also tweeted: “Prayer and thoughts are with you #DesmondTutu”, while @PK_Vandal wrote: “Speedy recovery to Arch Bishop #DesmondTutu”.

No further details of Tutu’s condition or hospital stay were available.
