Johannesburg - A whale was freed after becoming entangled in ropes off St James beach in Cape Town on Saturday, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.

“On arrival on scene it was found that a juvenile whale, estimated to be under a year old, a southern-right whale, was well trapped 600 meters off-shore...by lines (ropes)” said spokesman Craig Lambinon.

He said the whale was in distress as it was entangled underwater and struggled to get above water to catch its breath.

The team cut the ropes and the whale managed to swim away. - Sapa
