Port Elizabeth - As part of Mandela Day Celebrations, a life-size statue of late former president Nelson Mandela was unveiled on Tuesday, at the iconic stadium named after him in Port Elizabeth.
Mandela's statue was showcased at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium and will be moved to different locations in the metro such as Helenvale, Motherwell and Uitenhage Square.
Speaking at the event on Tuesday, Executive Mayor Athol Trollip, said that as the only city named after Mandela, the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro had a responsibility to live up to his legacy.
"As the city that carries the name of one of the world's most celebrated political icons, we ought to show our gratitude to those who consistently push the boundaries to make this Metro an extraordinary and better place to live in," said Trollip.
"The 18th of July is primarily earmarked for people across the globe to take action and effect some change, even if only for 67 minutes, to pay forward Madiba's legacy."
Trollip encouraged residents to communicate their aspirations for Nelson Mandela, for the next 67 days, in the context of the values and attributes of the great late statesman.
The mayor also encouraged residents to take selfies with the statue and join in on an ongoing campaign where people comment and express what Madiba's legacy means to them.
"People will be encouraged through social and traditional media platforms to have their say in how the city's administration could best position itself to live up these values," he said.
