Not all ANC delegates were spellbound as President Jacob Zuma delivered his political report to his party's national conference in Mangaung on Sunday.

Some dozed off while others tried to find something interesting in the conference programme.

Those with smartphones and tablets switched them on and began to keep themselves busy. Most delegates fanned themselves as the temperature in the marquee rose, because the air-conditioning was not functioning.

On stage, some members of the national executive committee struggled to stay awake. Others, like head of African National Congress policy Jeff Radebe and National Assembly Speaker Max Sisulu, took notes during Zuma’s long speech.

Gauteng MECs Barbara Creecy and Qedani Mahlangu were among the delegates who took to their smartphones while Zuma spoke.

Mineral water, branded “100 years”, was distributed in the audience to help the delegates keep cool. - Sapa
