A former drug addict from Bonteheuwel has started a sports club in his area to keep the youth from making the same mistakes he did.
Riyaad Avontuur, 40, says he was once a druggie, but he has turned his life around to start the Bonteheuwel Athletics Club in 2018.
“I am 3000 days drug-free now,” he tells the Daily Voice.
“I was an athlete while growing up but I mixed with the wrong crowd and started doing drugs.
“I know how I ended up there and I do not want the youth from my area to go that route.
“If I can save a few children from drugs I will be happy.”
The father of one was in and out of rehab until he decided to stay and get the help he needed to beat his addiction.
“My wife and daughter have been my biggest supporters and they have assisted me so much to beat my drug addiction.
“I was using mandrax, and it made me sleep and I went on to use dagga, tik and ecstasy.”
The club is a registered NPO and has a membership of over 60 athletes.
The kids train three times a week on a field in Bontas and Riyaad says they need equipment and running shoes.
“We are lacking mats, steppers, hurdles, spikes and other athletic equipment.”
He bought the equipment they have with his own money and with the help of his wife, Tasneem.
“When I started, I asked for a R50 joining fee, but parents here are struggling and I ended up taking children for free.”
His 11-year-old daughter, Nishaad, is also an athlete and says: “I like running because I am good at it and the coach always instils a positive attitude in us.
“When I grow older, I want to become the next Caster Semenya.”
