KwaZulu-Natal - Police have arrested three suspects in connection with last month’s murder of the induna (headman) of Qhudeni, Nquthu.

Provincial police spokesman, Colonel Vincent Mdunge, said that during the early hours of Saturday morning, Ulundi and Newcastle public order police members had conducted a joint operation in the Qhudeni area.

The local induna, Mlaleleni Sandlesibi Sithole, 53, was at his homestead with his family on August 30 when four men opened fire and killed him.

His two sons were wounded and taken to hospital. A case of murder and two counts of attempted murder were opened. The motive is believed to be a family-related dispute.

Mdunge said the suspects had been on the run since the murder but three were arrested in the operation at their homestead while the fourth had escaped. He said the police had recovered firearms, which would be sent for testing.

The three men, aged between 28 and 38, were to appear in the Nquthu Magistrate’s Court today facing charges of murder, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. - Daily News
