Johannesburg - Almost five months since Bedfordview father Shaun Lipshitz was gunned down in front of his 12-year-old son, the police have finally arrested three men for the crime.

On the night of January 28, two armed men got into Lipshitz’s home through a window.

The pair entered a room where Lipshitz and his young son were. Lipshitz immediately confronted the two men, managing to draw his gun.

Police said the men then opened fire on Lipshitz. In the ensuing gunbattle, the 37-year-old father was able to mortally wound the two robbers, but paid the ultimate price himself.

At his funeral, Lipshitz was honoured for protecting his son, who was not hurt during the hail of gunfire.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Reva Goldsmith described him as a man who adored his family. “The family are in shock. How do we recover? How do the kids recover when their father is gone? He gave his life for his children.”

Shortly after the murder, a R50 000 reward was offered for information leading to the arrests of further suspects, as police believed the men killed at Lipshitz’s home were part of a larger group targeting the area.

Police made a breakthrough in the case about two weeks ago. Provincial police spokesman Lungelo Dlamini said investigators following a tip-off found three men in Alexandra in possession of property taken from Lipshitz’s home. The trio were arrested and appeared in court on June 27, when they were charged with murder and house robbery.

The three men, Thapelo Tsele, Johannes Modise and Vusi Lengwati, will appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court on Monday to apply for bail.
