Gauteng -

Three suspects have been arrested in connection with an attack near Fochville on Saturday that left four people dead.

Three people were shot dead on the spot and another died in hospital on Sunday.

Five people are in a serious condition in hospital.

At least 18 shacks were burnt to the ground in the surprise attack on the Leeupoort informal settlement, south-west of Joburg.

The motive for the attacks was unclear, but the community believed it could be due to “cultural differences” as the men who were arrested were Lesotho nationals, said police.

The incidents took place in two main sections of the informal settlement.

In the first attack, a large group of men attacked the area and one man was shot dead inside his shack, while several other shacks were burnt down.

A few hours later, the gang of men moved a few hundred metres towards another section of the settlement. They went into a shack that operated as a shebeen and randomly opened fire.

The suspects were due to appear in the Fochville Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
