Johannesburg - The two men accused of killing a Free State policeman during an armed robbery will apply for bail in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

The men, aged 19 and 28, were allegedly part of a four-man gang who robbed a shop in Kopanong last week. When they tried to flee, the police arrived, and the gang ran back into the shop.

They came out shooting, hitting police Sergeant Molahlehi Ephraim Mokhasi, 41. He died on the scene.

The gang fled, but were soon confronted by other officers and the Bloemfontein dog unit. Two officers were wounded - one in the hand and leg, and the other in the hand - in the ensuing shootout.

One of the suspects was killed and another arrested. The following day the second suspect was arrested.

The pair face charges of murder, attempted murder and armed robbery. - Sapa
