Taxi bosses in Wynberg will be paying tribute to their former rank master by offering commuters kwaai specials on Black Friday.
Two years after the death of Igshaan Brown, 52, who had a long battle with stomach cancer, the Greencabs Taxi Association says they are offering trips for only R10 from Wynberg to Cape Town and Century City from 26 November to 28 November.
Spokesperson Amien Carlsen, 53, says a year after Brown came up with the idea, he sadly passed away.
“He came up with a plan to help mense on the day and it was our way of saying thanks to the commuters who supported us.
“It was a lekker success and we sommer had a Black Weekend and because it really helped people and worked so well, we kept the special going for months.”
He says drivers were devastated when they heard that Boeta Igshaan, who had been the rank master for over 25 years, died.
“He had stomach cancer and never said anything. He died and on that day all the drivers drove for free at his janaazah. We planned to continue in his honour but then Covid and the lockdowns started and all of us really suffered.”

Carlsen says while many taxi bosses got temporary relief from the government, it didn’t help as their business tanked.
“Many owners had to sell off some of their vans as they were unable to pay the banks.
“Our income was reduced to a mere 30% and everyone sukkeled.
“So now we want to honour his memory by bringing back the special.”
