Cape Town - A violent protest erupted in the Langa area on Tuesday morning, with residents vowing to shut the area down until housing and service delivery issues are dealt with.

Angry residents pelted vehicles with stones along Jakes Gerwel Drive and Bluegum Road.

City of Cape Town traffic spokeswoman Maxine Jordaan said: “People are protesting in the Langa area and as a result Jakes Gerwel Drive between the N2 and Bofors Circle has been closed to traffic. Motorists are being diverted by officials on scene.”

Metrorail regional manager Richard Walker said that services into the Langa area were suspended because residents were targeting trains.

“We are still getting information at this stage. We do not have clarity on what damage is being done and therefore we are suspending train services until the situation is calm. During this time we will assess the damage,” he said.

Late on Monday evening, protesters organised the protest on Twitter, calling for residents to prevent people from going to school and work.
