Amsterdam - Some 200 people were evacuated from a cruise ship on Wednesday after it collided with a cargo ship loaded with cars on the Waal River near the Dutch city of Nijmegen, authorities said.

The passengers on board the Swiss cruise ship MS Edelweiss were "shaken, but unharmed," local safety office Veiligheidsregio Gelderland-Zuid said on Twitter.

Local media reported there had been 160 passengers and 80 crew members on board the ship when it collided with the cargo ship, which had two people on board while en route to Rotterdam.

The collision pushed the cruise ship into a pillar of a railway bridge over the river, causing significant damage to the cruiser and resulting in a fire. The blaze was quickly extinguished.

The reason for the collision was not immediately known.
