US President Barack Obama was outraged and offended by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's suggestion that the US government was involved in the September 11 attacks. The US delegation led a Western walkout at the United Nations after Ahmadinejad said most Americans as well as people in other countries believed that the US government was behind the attacks that killed nearly 3 000 people nine years ago.

The Iranian president said there was a theory that "some segments within the US government orchestrated the attack to reverse the declining American economy and its grips on the Middle East, in order also to save the Zionist regime."
