'Always calm' 124-year-old dies in Brazil

Rio de Janeiro - The allegedly oldest woman in the world died in Brazil at 124 years, according to media reports on Tuesday.

Maria Etelvina Dos Santos succumbed to a stroke over the weekend in the north-east provincial capital Salvador.

The descendant of African slaves, Dos Santos was born on July 15 1878, according to her official birth certificate.

She leaves behind five grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, 39 great-great-grandchildren as well as four great-great-great-grandchildren.

Her only daughter died many years ago, it was reported.

Dos Santos enjoyed good health to the end. Her prescription for a long life: "Always remain calm". - Sapa-DPA
