Adelaide - The Anglican archbishop of Adelaide resigned on Friday over a child sex abuse scandal involving members of his church.

Archbishop Ian George's announcement followed the publication last week of an independent report into the church's handling of up to 200 cases of child sex abuse over several years.

He was not personally accused of abuse, but was criticised for not dealing adequately with victims molested by church workers.

George said his resignation was not in response to pressure from media or from within the church.

"Archbishops do not resign from office in response to public outcry, media pressure or internal church deliberations," George said in a statement.

The report presented to South Australia's state Parliament last week claimed George repeatedly ignored or undermined victims' complaints.

The church was "more concerned with its legal and insurance responsibilities than the healing of those who have been abused," wrote the report's authors former Supreme Court judge Trevor Olsson and university professor Donna Chung. - Sapa-AP
