Australia - The great-grandson of Scouts founder Lord Baden-Powell was yesterday jailed for life for murdering his beauty queen wife.

Gerard Baden-Clay, 43, killed Allison, also 43, after a row at their home in Brisbane, Australia. He dumped her body by a river.

Her family, who were seated in the crowded public gallery at the city’s supreme court, cheered when the jury found him guilty after a six-week trial.

Baden-Clay will serve 15 years in jail before he is eligible for parole.

The court was told he had multiple pressures weighing down on him on the night his wife vanished in April 2012, among them the fact he was having an affair and his real estate business was in debt.

Todd Fuller QC, prosecuting, said Baden-Clay had “efficiently and effectively” killed his wife, probably by smothering the mother of three during a struggle.

Baden-Clay insisted he did not kill his wife, claiming the scratch marks on his face were not from her fingernails but were the result of cutting himself while shaving.

He was said to have had numerous lovers during their 14-year marriage. - Daily Mail
