Rome - Silvio Berlusconi was forced Friday to cancel his final campaign rally because of eye trouble, his office said.

The three-time premier will no longer speak at a party event in Naples, but would instead rally his supporters via video message and would also appear on TV later Friday.

His office said the 76-year-old was diagnosed with a posterior vitreous detachment - a condition common among older people that could lead to retinal detachment.

Patients are advised to avoid abrupt movements, but no surgery is required to treat it. “It's nothing serious,” Berlusconi's doctor Alberto Zangrillo told Adnkronos news agency. - Sapa-dpa
