London - Motor-racing mogul Bernie Ecclestone came first place among Britain's 500 biggest earners for the second year running, according to the latest Sunday Times Pay List.

The newspaper estimated that Ecclestone made R10,8-billion in the year to October 1, garnered from his 25 percent stake in Formula One racing and from running individual races.

One factor that remained unchanged was the gender bias. Women still made up only 10 percent of the names, down from 11 percent last year, and the top 10 earners were all men.

However, that dominance was challenged by pop superstar Madonna, 11th on the list with R411-million, and Harry Potter author JK Rowling, in 14th position with R340-million. Queen Elizabeth was ranked 24th with estimated earnings of R208-million.

Last year Ecclestone headed the list with R8,46-billion.

Once again, he was laps ahead of the second top-earner, financier Martyn Arbib, who earned R1,68-billion.

Boxer Lennox Lewis (R219-million) was ranked as the top-earning sportsman, well ahead of England and Manchester United soccer player David Beckham (R89-million) and motor racing driver Eddie Irvine (R82-million). - Reuters
