London- Former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher is likely to remain in hospital for several more days following an operation on her broken arm, her son said Saturday.

The frail 83-year-old was taken to a London hospital last Friday after a fall at her nearby home.

Following the operation to insert a pin into the upper arm on Friday, Mark Thatcher said his mother would not be released from hospital before Wednesday.

After visiting her on Saturday at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, he said it was now likely to be longer before she would be allowed home.

A spokesman for Baroness Thatcher described her condition as "comfortable" and said she was resting.

Thatcher, dubbed the Iron Lady for her uncompromising leadership style, is Britain's only female prime minister. She headed a Conservative government between 1979 and 1990 and overhauled the British economy during the 1980s.

Thatcher has suffered a series of strokes in recent years and now suffers from dementia. She generally avoids public speaking on doctors' advice. - AFP
