Los Angeles -

The death toll from the mudslide four months ago in Washington state has reached 43, authorities said on Tuesday.

The body of a woman was located on the west side of the slide site, according to the Snohomish County medical examiner's office. Officials believe she was the last unaccounted victim of the March 22 disaster, when a 1.5km ridge gave way above the logging village of Oso around 100km north-east of Seattle.

The landslide followed a month of record-breaking rain in Washington, which borders Canada on the Pacific Coast.

The unusually heavy rainfall in the region and previous slides in the area were contributing factors leading to the disaster, according to a study sponsored by National Science Foundation. - Sapa-dpa
